H.I.O. - Golf Hole Auger

KSAB Golf Equipment

Industrial Design / Engineering / Prototyping / CMF

The holes on a golf course moves around the green by simply drilling new holes and replacing the old one with the plug. On some courses the holes switches everyday which puts a lot of constrain on the greenkeepers when using a traditional auger, powered by muscle power.

The client aimed to develop the worlds first electric auger that uses a hammer action, driving the blade into the ground, hence easening the work for the course greenkeepers while maintaining a high accuracy.

A lot of focus was put on solving how to cover the mechanics and the possibly dangerous action of the coils and cutter, while still make it possible to open up with easy accessibility for maintance and repairs.

Early explorations of the handles.

The very first prototypes were using a hydraulic system to power the hammer action. While giving us some useful numbers when it comes to effect and time, this solution later was later by a system with two rotating swing arms that stored the energy of the coil and releasing it on the top.

The project was quite prototype heavy. Everything from the main mechanics to the handles was iterated several times.
